With the surrender of the Japanese at the end of World War Two, the job of the U.S. Marines was not over. The islands had to be demilitarized and the Japanese forces repatriated to mainland Japan. In the Bonin Islands, this job fell to the 1'st Battalion, Third Marines, later to become known as the Chichi Jima Marines.
One of the members of this group was Bill Monks, of Fairview, New Jersey and the recollection of his experiences, as well as those of other Chichi Jima Marines, appears as one of the other links entitled "Marine Vignette Number 77" on the Links Section of my Chichi Jima web site. It makes for some very interesting reading. Use your "Back" button to get back there.
Incidently, this group of Marines continues to hold an annual reunion, and I have been privileged to attend three of them, even though I was never a Marine. The year 2003 reunion was held in June in Wallingford, CT and the year 2004 reunion is scheduled to be held in Alexandria, VA September 22-26, 2004. Visits to the White House and the Quantico Marine Base are planned. The contact person for this event is:
